Advanced Placement Environmental Science is a four-credit,
two-trimester, laboratory class that is the equivalent of a
one-semester, introductory college course. This course provides students
with the scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies required to
understand the interrelationships of the natural world, to identify and
analyze environmental problems both natural and human-made, to evaluate
the relative risks associated with these problems, and to examine
alternative solutions for resolving or preventing them. Due to the
quantitative analysis required in the course, students should be
comfortable using algebra and performing calculations on tests without a
calculator. Students are expected to complete nightly readings from the
college-level text and other publications, and will participate in both
short- and long-term research projects. Fieldwork focuses on our local
environment. Summer reading will be required. The curriculum will
prepare students to take the College Board AP Environmental Science
exam, given in May.
