APES 9 Club

Description of Club: For 9th grade students who would like to sit for the College Board AP Environmental Science test in May 2011, there will be an opportunity to build upon your content and skills from 9th grade Science, and prepare for this exam through summer work and participation in the after-school APES - 9 Club.

Criteria: This opportunity will be available for students taking Honors Ecology / Environmental Science who are ready for and interested in an additional academic challenge. Students will be expected to comprehend 11th - 12th grade reading level material, and complete multi-step mathematical calculations, above grade-level, without a calculator. Qualities that would help you succeed in this endeavor would be a disciplined work ethic, ability to manage time effectively, and ability to work independently.

Process:

  • Send an email or note to Science Department Head Ms. Mary McCarthy by May 1, 2010, stating your interest in participating in APES -9
    Email: mccarthm@arps.org
Address for note: Ms. Mary McCarthy, ARHS, 21 Mattoon St., Amherst, MA 01002
  • Attend meeting at the High School in June, to receive your summer assignment. (There will be a test in the beginning of September on the summer material.)
  • Complete supplemental assignments throughout the year.
  • Club meetings will occur monthly in the Fall and Winter trimesters, and be scheduled biweekly in Spring. During these sessions, students will discuss key concepts with the teacher-advisors, and learn and practice skills needed for the AP exam.
